Year 1 – Award 1

Palletcap scores Awards success in first year of business

In a perfect ending to an incredibly successful first year of business, Palletcap Limited has been handed the materials handling industry’s ultimate accolade – a Fork Lift Truck Association Award for Excellence.

The Award is in recognition of the company’s ingeniously simple but effective solution to the problem of top-stacking damage. Its product, the Palletcap, is a highly visible warning cone that attaches to the top of vulnerable freight – instantly identifying it as fragile… without the need for reading and interpretation of labels. In a split second it tells busy fork lift operators to avoid loading anything on top of it. The result: goods remain safe from crushing throughout the supply chain.

After successful trials of the idea, Palletcap the company was formed in February 2004. Within a few months it had been taken up by many of the leading pallet carriers – case after case showing spectacular reductions in stock damage following its introduction. Just 12 months later it was announced as winner in the Safety category at the glittering Awards 2005 ceremony on 26th February – in the face of stiff international competition from such big names as Cat, Hyster and Jungheinrich.

Hayley Shirley, inventor of Palletcap and Managing Director of the Staffordshire-based company, hit upon the concept for Palletcap while working as a business development manager in overnight pallet distribution. As Hayley herself was well aware, the cost of top-stacking damage went way beyond the value of the goods lost:

“Damaged stock and compensation claims are not the only price a company pays. Think of the administrative costs that go with each accident. Think of how customers’ confidence in a company is dented by such losses. Think of how the company’s reputation is affected.

“Palletcap is proven to slash those costs. By fitting Palletcap, companies have been able to win new business and retain existing customers. To highlight their commitment to protecting customers’ interests, they can even have Palletcaps customised with their own logo.

“When you add it all up, this inexpensive purchase – made from cardboard, flat-packed for easy storage and distribution – makes perfect economic sense. With Palletcap it couldn’t be simpler to save money.”
